4 Steps to Take After Purchasing a Boat
Summer is here and you know what that means– boating season! If you just purchased a boat, you may be wondering what the next steps are to protect your new investment before you hit the water. For all you first-time boat buyers, here are the steps you’ll need to take to make your boat summer-ready.
Step 1: Get your license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card)
If you don’t have one already, be sure to obtain your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). Just like the road, waterbodies in BC have safety rules and regulations. Accredited course providers like Boater Exam make it easy with three simple steps: study the online material, pass the exam, and print your boating card. You will be sailing through the waves in no time!
Step 2: Register your boat
If you just purchased a boat, you will need to register it. All pleasure crafts powered by an engine of 10 horsepower or more are required to have a Pleasure Craft License (PCL) issued by Transport Canada. You must get or transfer a PCL within 90 days of purchasing the boat, and this can be done online or through the mail. Additionally, a PCL is free and is valid for 10 years.
Step 3: Find a broker to insure your boat
The next step is to properly insure your boat. Insurance coverage needs vary for each kind of boat. Sussex Insurance can provide coverage for the following:
- liability coverage
- replacement cost
- agreed value coverage
- emergency boat towing
- underinsured or uninsured boater protection
We make sure to tailor each policy by taking into consideration information such as length of watercraft, size of motor, type of motor (inboard/outboard), type of watercraft, use (rental to others/sporting activities), and where the boat is kept when not in use. Get a quote from us today.
Step 4: Insure your trailer
Now that your boat is insured, don’t forget to insure your trailer. ICBC requires a license plate and liability insurance on your boat trailer. Sussex is your one-stop shop when it comes to your boating insurance needs. We are happy to help get everything covered at once so you can get out on the water and enjoy your boat.
Spend less time worrying about insurance, and more time on the water this summer. Find a Sussex location near you so we can provide coverage for all your boating needs.
